In New Jersey criminal law, “Charitable purpose” is a term defined by statute rather than by its everyday meaning. Its statutory definition — quoted verbatim below — controls how the term is applied throughout the New Jersey criminal code.

What does “Charitable purpose” mean in New Jersey criminal law?

"Charitable purpose" means: (1) any purpose described in section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, 26 U.S.C. s.501(c)(3); or (2) any benevolent, philanthropic, humane, social welfare, public health, or other eleemosynary objective, or an objective that benefits law enforcement personnel, firefighters, or other persons who protect the public safety. "Material support or resources" means: (1) services or assistance with knowledge or purpose that the services or assistance will be used in preparing for or carrying out an act of terrorism in violation of section 2 of P.L.2002, c.26 (N.J.S.A. 2C:38-5)
